Holograph diary of Hartley's tour through the Swiss Alps and journey to Florence and Rome. Hartley describes Swiss scenery, miles covered and glaciers and peaks observed and climbed, often with the aid of guides, and comments on the other English travelers whom he met in the course of walking from Geneva through the Jungfrau to Lucerne and back to Geneva. Hartley's entries for his trip to Rome by way of Florence catalog art, churches, civic buildings, Roman ruins, and other tourist sights visited, noting that he "shall not write down everything I see in every day." Although Hartley states that his sojourn in Rome is to last several months, the diary concludes a week after his arrival.
